11:00 Lessons Learned from Keflavik International Airport's Airfield Rehabilitation and Expansion Project

In response to booming trans-Atlantic tourism, Iceland's Keflavik Airport is undergoing strategic airfield rehabilitation and expansion that includes the resurfacing of both runways and construction of a third, slated to break ground in 2017. This session will explore Keflavik Airport's expansion masterplan and airside infrastructure development, including:
  • Rapid runway resurfacing: key considerations in materials selection and operational efficiency to rehabilitate runway pavements while accommodating increasing aircraft volumes
  • Strategic taxiway expansion: undertaking continual assessment and simulations to balance airline requirements with viable constructability
  • Analyzing the decision-making factors behind additional airfield infrastructure including high-speed exits and apron buildouts
