From aircraft configurations to environmental stressors, there are myriad factors to take into consideration when selecting a pavement mixture for your airfield. Furthermore, developing an inspection and maintenance strategy is critical to ensuring long-term pavement integrity. This session will take an in-depth look at pavement materials selection and testing, incorporating key findings from the FAA’s Accelerated Pavement Testing research program, including:
  • Comparing the durability characteristics of new paving materials such as warm mix asphalt, polymer-modified binders and nano-technologies
  • Analyzing pavement mixtures that can handle aircraft type and frequency; climatic conditions and erosion;
  • Understanding asphalt grades and binders, bitumen quality and their impact on asphalt performance
  • Translating lessons learned from airfield pavement instrumentation case examples into actionable strategies to apply to your airfield
About Your Workshop Leader:
Navneet Garg is a Program Manager in Airport Technology R&D Branch at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and manages FAA projects on Field Instrumentation and Testing, Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing, and Pavement Materials Research. Navneet earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997, and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, in 1993. He has been actively involved in airport pavement research at the FAA’s National Airport Pavement Test Facility since 1998. He has authored several FAA technical reports, and more than 50 research papers for different journals and conference proceedings. He has taught in airport pavement design and evaluation workshops for International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Asphalt Institute, Airport Consultants Council (ACC), and other international organizations. He is a member of the TRB Committees on Accelerated Pavement Testing, Pavement Rehabilitation, Design of Geosystems, and Mineral Aggregates, and ASCE Airfield Pavement Committee.
